Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration

Safe, Supportive Psychedelic Harm Reduction in Peterborough, ON

Are you using psychedelics on your own, outside of a therapy session, or with a regulated psychedelic prescriber, to deal with issues like trauma and PTSD? At Restorative Mind Body Connections, we offer Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration (PHRI) to help individuals in the province of Ontario.  If you are are using psychedelics as a personal choice towards healing, or undergoing Psychedelic Assisted Therapy with a regulated prescriber, contact Restorative Mind Body Connections to support you for the following reasons:

1. Facilitating Safe and Intentional Experiences

Psychedelic experiences, including those induced by ketamine, can be intense, emotional, and sometimes disorienting. The brain’s plasticity (its ability to reorganize and form new connections) during these experiences is a powerful tool, but it can also be unpredictable. A trained professional can help to create a safe and supportive environment, which is critical for ensuring that the experience stays grounded and focused on healing rather than becoming overwhelming or potentially traumatic.

2. Guiding the Exploration of Unconscious Material

One of the reasons psychedelics like ketamine are so effective in treating treatment-resistant mental health issues is their ability to open the doors to unconscious thoughts, feelings, and memories. However, navigating this material can be complex and sometimes disturbing. A trained therapist can help clients make sense of what arises during the experience, helping them to integrate difficult emotions, uncovering deep-seated beliefs or traumas, and providing tools to process these insights in a constructive way.

3. Enhancing Integration Post-Session

The brain is highly malleable during a psychedelic experience, but without integration, these new neural connections might not be sustained. Integration refers to the process of bringing the insights and changes from the psychedelic experience into everyday life. A therapist can help patients translate the shifts in perception and thinking that occur during ketamine therapy into lasting behavioral, cognitive, and emotional change. Without integration support, the benefits of the experience may be fleeting.

4. Support During the Neuroplasticity Window

Neuroplasticity is a dynamic process, and it doesn't stop once the psychedelic experience ends. The brain continues to rewire itself in the hours and days following a session. A therapist can help patients recognize and nurture these changes, reinforcing new patterns of thinking, behaving, and feeling. They can also help individuals develop strategies to support the long-term restructuring of the brain—such as mindfulness practices, cognitive-behavioral strategies, or lifestyle changes—that promote continued healing and growth.

5. Managing Set and Setting

The environment in which someone undergoes psychedelic therapy (the "set and setting") plays a key role in how the brain responds to the experience. Professionals are not just there to guide during the session but also to ensure that the set (mindset) and setting (environment) are conducive to a beneficial experience. A well-structured therapeutic environment allows for the development of trust, relaxation, and surrender, which are all critical to a successful psychedelic experience.

6. Addressing Underlying Psychological Issues

Ketamine and other psychedelics can bring unresolved psychological material to the surface, including childhood trauma, suppressed emotions, or self-destructive behaviors. A trained professional is equipped to recognize and address these issues as they arise, ensuring that clients don’t get stuck in difficult emotional states or unproductive thought patterns. This support can also help people avoid re-traumatization, which can sometimes occur when deep material is encountered without guidance.

7. Building Long-Term Resilience

While ketamine and other psychedelics can be powerful catalysts for healing, ongoing therapeutic work is often necessary to help individuals continue to make progress. A professional can work with the client to build resilience, teach new coping strategies, and provide continued support as the person transitions back into their everyday life. Without this longer-term support, it can be hard to consolidate the growth that was achieved during the session and sustain it over time.

8. Minimizing Risks and Maximizing Therapeutic Effects

Without professional guidance, there are risks associated with psychedelic therapy. For example, individuals may have difficulty distinguishing between insights and delusions, or they may misinterpret their experience in ways that lead to maladaptive coping mechanisms. Additionally, people with certain mental health conditions, like a history of psychosis, may be at increased risk for negative reactions. Professionals can carefully screen patients, monitor for adverse effects, and provide support to ensure that the experience is not only safe but truly transformative.

9. Creating a Structured Framework for Change

Psychedelic experiences often provide profound insights, but without a clear framework for how to apply those insights, the changes may not be enduring. Professionals help structure this framework by exploring how the psychedelic experience can translate into practical, real-world behavior change. This might involve discussing action steps, setting goals, or using cognitive tools to change patterns of thought that contribute to mental health issues.

In sum, while ketamine and other psychedelics have remarkable potential to promote neuroplasticity and healing, the therapeutic benefits are greatly enhanced with professional guidance and support. A trained therapist helps patients navigate the complex emotional terrain of the psychedelic experience, integrate the insights gained, and continue to foster brain health and resilience in the long term. Without this support, the benefits of the psychedelic session can be fleeting, and the brain may struggle to sustain the positive changes that occurred during the experience.

How Restorative Mind Body Connections Can Help

At Restorative Mind Body Connections, we are not involved with providing psychedelics or sourcing out psychedelic substances. Instead, we offer Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration (PHRI) to ensure the safety and effectiveness of psychedelic experiences.

If you are working with a regulated psychedelic prescriber for treatment resistant disorders, pain management, or through either the Special Access Program or a Section 56 Exemption, Restorative Mind Body Connections can work closely with your medical team to provide the necessary preparation and integration for your psychedelic experience.

Ask about our support services for clinical setting ketamine!  We provide professional support by attending your ketamine infusions!

We will monitor the psychological effect by ensuring that your altered state of consciousness, whatever it may bring up, is supported through the collaborative preparation phase.

We will support you in managing emotional and psychological responses, ensuring you get the most out of the treatment.

We will enhance the therapeutic benefit, based on the preparation sessions, and determined by your goals for the treatment.

We will manage safety by recognising adverse effects, and determined by the collaborative preparation component.

We will ensure personalisation of care, tailoring your care based on your needs.

And we are always considering ethical considerations and patient advocacy.  Informed consent is essential to this process.  Going into a psychedelic experience, without knowing what to expect, is unethical on the providers part.  Through preparation and integration, we can uncover what blocks the mind has protected you from; how to work with that when resistance or passivity occur in the experience, and how to relate it to your own way of living that both enhances and decreases your quality of life.

Anecdotally, the consensus is that without the right support, psychedelics can create more suffering.  Also, anecdotally but with building empirical evidence, with the right support, psychedelics can bring a person back into alignment with who they really are - not just who they think or feel they are when those thoughts or feelings decrease the quality of life.

PHRI vs. PAT: What’s the Difference?

"Psychedelic" refers to mind-manifesting and applies to compounds and experiences with substances and encounters that can alter your perception and heighten awareness of mental activities.

About Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration - (PHRI)

Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration is a clinical model that incorporates harm reduction psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and psychodynamic therapy in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. The goal is to minimize risk and maximize the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics by providing a structured framework for analyzing and integrating psychedelic experiences.

About Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy - (PAT)

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy, on the other hand, is a model that supports patients in their choice to use psychedelics as a means of healing.  Because of the legal structures in Canada, Psychedelic Assisted Therapy is most often seen in ketamine clinics. Patients undergo an infusion of ketamine, a nasal spray or an injection of Ketamine while in a western clinical model setting.  Medical needs are monitored, such as heart rate, however, psychological or emotional support is generally not provided, or limited at best.

Our Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy services offer a comprehensive and supportive approach to healing, using psychedelics, like ketamine, to address persistent mental health disorders and chronic pain. Unlike traditional clinics, which often focus on medical monitoring without psychological support, we provide a holistic experience that integrates preparation, therapy, and integration.

Our program is designed to help individuals facing treatment-resistant conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, OCD, substance addiction, and more. Psychedelics have the potential to access deep regions of the brain, facilitating lasting change. However, to truly unlock their therapeutic benefits, proper emotional and psychological support is essential.

Whether you are new to psychedelic therapy or seeking an experienced guide, we are here to provide you with the necessary tools for safe exploration and healing. Our experienced team ensures you receive the right preparation before your sessions, as well as meaningful integration support after your psychedelic experience so you can implement the lasting changes you want in your life.
